Eco Coffins & Sustainable Choices: A Guide to Green Funerals

Funerals and traditional cremation services can have more of an impact on the environment than you might realise. If you’re planning your funeral ahead of time, or organising a funeral for a loved one, there are many ways you can make sustainable choices for funerals. To learn more about eco-friendly funeral options, keep on reading

What Are Green Funerals?

Also known as an eco-friendly funeral, green funeral is a funeral service that has a minimal impact on the environment. Green funerals do not have an embalming process, so no harmful chemicals are used on the deceased. No cremations also minimise the emissions that would usually be released into the atmosphere. Natural resources can be protected, rather than being negatively impacted by green funerals, and the body can be returned back to nature with as little interference as possible.

Types Of Sustainable Coffins

Sustainable coffins are a significant way you can reduce the negative impact on the environment. Read below to learn about sustainable coffin types.

Bamboo Coffins

Bamboo coffins are a common type of alternative coffin for eco-funerals. Because bamboo is such a fast growing plant, harvesting this plant isn’t detrimental to the environment, and it makes for a safe, environmentally friendly coffin material.

Soft Wooden Coffins

If you’re still after a wooden coffin, there are some eco-friendly options available that release less chemical varnishes. Untreated softwood is used to minimise the amount of chemicals being spread, and you can choose organic linings too, further reducing the harm caused to the environment.

Cardboard Coffins

Cardboard coffins aren’t great for cremations, but they can be effective for woodland burials. The recycled paper will break down quickly in the soil, so it will not cause pollution, and you can add organic decorations such as flowers or drawings to this coffin. Materials such as bamboo, willow and even woll caskets will biodegrade easily, making them a viable option for a green funeral.

Biodegradable Pods

Burial pods, or biodegradable pods, are pods made from organic matter. They are completely biodegradable, and allow the body to naturally decompose in the soil. A tree is planted above as a memorial, bringing the body back to nature. However, this burial pod isn’t available in the UK yet, and is still being tested.
